The Shelby County United Way is starting our 58th year of serving the citizens, organizations, and companies of Shelby County. Over this period, your trusted donations have made significant impact in the lives of Shelby County citizens of all ages. Today, 27 agencies and programs receive United Way funding and all change lives in the impact areas of Health, Education, and Income. Separately, Shelby County United Way offers Special Project Grants available to 501 (c) 3 non-profit agencies in Shelby County throughout the year to assist in one time projects or programs.
In 2014, The Shelby County United Way collaborated with the Salvation Army, Shelby County Counseling Center, and the Sidney Shelby County YMCA to enhance the Salvation Army’s Kids Corp afterschool program. With United Way funding, 35-45 elementary and middle school students are served after school Monday thru Friday. There are two updated computer labs, homework class rooms, a recreation room, and access to a gymnasium. Council On Rural Services R.S.V.P assists in recruiting volunteers.
Starting in late March of 2015, the Shelby County United Way will partner with the Shelby County Libraries and many community partners to implement Imagination Library. Imagination Library is a literacy program where Shelby County infants up to their 5th birthday are mailed an age appropriate book. As one of the community partner’s, Wilson Memorial Hospital will enroll new babies born at the hospital. This data rich program will improve all children through development to kindergarten readiness and put them on the path for education success.
