What is Cornerstone Society?
Shelby County United Way's Cornerstone Society recognizes philanthropic leaders in Shelby County who generously contribute $500 or more to United Way's annual campaign. In the 2008 campaign, Cornerstone Society members represented almost 25% of total campaign contributions. There are approximately 425 Cornerstone Society members.
Why should I become a member?
Your investment in our community has great value and here are examples of how important your gift is:
$10 a week - provides 40 hours of counseling
at Catholic Social Services to someone
battling mental illness. In a calendar
year, Catholic Social Services assist
150 to 200 individuals who require approximately
12-14 hours of counseling.
$20 a week - provides a month of adult
day care services to elderly, handicapped
and impaired individuals through the Adult
Day Services program. These services
help to provide and promote an alternative
to premature nursing home placement.
$48 a week - provides 13 uninsured or
underinsured individuals medical services
at the free health clinic, Compassionate
Care. On average, Compassionate
Care provides medical services to 28 individuals
per week.
$96 a week - provides 30 minutes of credit
counseling to individuals going through
bankruptcy, foreclosures and debt management.
In a calendar year, Consumer Credit Counseling
provided approximately 265 hours of counseling.
How do I join?
You are invited to join the Cornerstone Society by giving an annual gift of $500 or more individually or jointly with a spouse. It is necessary for couples to notify the Shelby County United Way on the pledge form of their joint gift.
If your place of employment runs a United
Way campaign, you will have the opportunity
to become a leadership giver during that
campaign. If you are retired or
your employer does not run a campaign

Yes, there are four levels of giving.

Are Cornerstone Society gifts counted in employee campaign results?
Yes. If you are employed your gift will be counted as part of your employer’s campaign. Gifts to the Cornerstone Society significantly benefit the community and dramatically improve employee giving results.
Do Cornerstone Society members receive special recognition?
Yes, they are listed in a special recognition publication. However, individuals or couples wishing their gift to remain anonymous will not be published. Leadership givers will also receive invitations to Cornerstone Society events.
