Campaign Update - October 13, 2011
Now that our campaign has reached the midway point, we continue to center on a specific group of programs that the United Way supports. This week we feature our Caring for People in Crisis sector. This group offers services through American Red Cross, New Choices, Samaritan Works Shelby County Victim Services and CASA/GAL.
All of these programs are not intended or needed by everyone, but are offered to anyone. That is why the United Way is present in Shelby County, to offer services. The campaign stands at $158,998 raised, or 12.2% of our goal. Last year at this time we stood at $143,784 or 11.3%. “Too meet our goal of $1,300,000, it takes numerous volunteers to make all of the contacts. We have a great team doing the work thus we continue to finish the task at hand” said Bob Parker, executive director of the agency.
Did you know the American Red Cross is on the scene at the time of a fire? They offer immediate assistance for those individuals experiencing an unplanned emergency. The term emergency, no matter how large or small the fire may be, is a setback as this is a disaster to the family. Where do I get clothes; where do we sleep tonight; how do I feed the kids? These questions seem to be so basic, but when that becomes “THE” issue, it is good to know the Red Cross is there to help.
New Choices is a domestic shelter for women and children experiencing domestic violence. At the home, they will be safe and be able to live without fear, receive counseling and be able to refocus their new life. New Choices also offers numerous educational training sessions addressing subjects like violence prevention, bullying and dating.
Off to court – how do I know what is going to happen? Depending on the case, that is where Shelby County Victim Services and CASA/GAL come to the rescue. Whether it is the case of surviving family members from a major crime or a child who appears before the Juvenile Judge because he/she has been abused, these two programs may be able to help you. These workers have experience in this field and can be a great advocate for the family.
Do you know of someone who needs long-term help in recovery from drugs and /or alcohol? Samaritan Works may be the answer for you. Today Samaritan Works offers both a women’s and men’s home in Sidney for clients who desire to become free of these habits.
As we seek to solidify our growing tree, the United Way continues to offer human services for the people of this county. “That is what we are charged to do,” Parker states. If you would like to participate in our campaign to meet our goal and are in need of a pledge card or need information, please call the office at 492-2101.

United Way offers funding for special projects
Special projects is one o
f the funding opportunities provided by the Shelby County United Way to the community. This support is intended for nonprofit organizations who are seeking time-limited funding for creative responses to pressing human needs in Shelby County, United Way officials said. The local United Way has offered special-project funding for many years. Over the past 10 years, more than $301,000 has been given to organizations covering many different types of projects.
Originally, special-project funding was stipulated only to nonprofit organizations that were starting new programs. This was called "seed money grants." Over the past few years two more categories were added, Continuing Community Support Grants and Community Assistance Grants. The continuing category is for projects that were begun with support from the seed funding and have been viewed as being beneficial to Shelby County citizens with the United Way wanting to see that program continue.
The Community Assistance Program is awarded based on that organization's purpose and need.
Consideration for acceptance will include the benefit of service to the community and the number of clients served. In most cases funding is not approved to support staffing, but it may be used to assist with the cost of materials, supplies, fees or equipment needs.
Due to the success of the programs that have been supported over the years, and since there are needs throughout the entire year and not just annually, the Shelby County United Way approved at its recent board meeting to offer project application four times per year. The board has approved a goal of $50,000 for the fiscal period, July 1, 2011 to June 30, 2012.
A subcommittee of the board reviews every project that is submitted. Current chairwoman is Deb Hovestreydt, who said, "Special projects is a unique part of what is done by the United Way. This program allows flexibility in assisting the county as the needs arise."
Applications for the next quarter must be received by June 1 and can be received by contacting the office. The mission of the Shelby County United Way is to continually identify, evaluate and make possible the human services needed for the community. For additional information on the Shelby County United Way, call the office at 492-2101.
We Made It!
